Leasha Richards Miller is a contemporary visionary artist and founder of Atunwa Studios, creating symbolic narrative paintings that explore ancestry, consciousness, transformation, identity, and the unseen forces that shape the human experience.
Born in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and now based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Richards Miller draws upon Caribbean memory, ancestral symbolism, mythology, dreams, nature, and personal experience. Her paintings function as thresholds—inviting the viewer to look beyond the visible and encounter what may already exist within memory, lineage, and the subconscious.
Her artistic practice emerged intuitively rather than through formal training. Following the loss of her father, painting became a visual language through which images, symbols, and ideas that seemed to arrive beyond conscious thought could take physical form.
Atunwa, a Yoruba word associated with rebirth and returning through lineage, reflects the philosophy at the center of her practice:

How the Work Begins
My paintings begin in dreams, waking visions and symbolic experiences. I understand these encounters as invitations to remember — the self beneath expectation, what may have been interrupted or forgotten through history, and the parts of ourselves we have been taught to fear, conceal or abandon.
Through recurring symbols of water, roots, DNA, portals, butterflies, feminine figures, darkness, light and transformation, I translate these experiences into visual narratives.
The paintings do not treat darkness as evil or as something simply to escape. Darkness is often the place where the deepest transformation occurs.
